Making homemade tortilla chips
Of course there are pretty good store-bought tortilla chip brands available, but like with anything, nothing beats homemade! Homemade tortilla chips are very easy to make and are perfect to serve alongside your favorite salsa and dips.
Ingredients for homemade tortilla chips
There are three staples you can pretty much always find at any house: corn tortillas, oil, and salt. This is all you need to make fresh, crunchy, perfectly golden, homemade tortilla chips!
Fry or bake the chips?
Below you will find a recipe for fried and baked tortilla chips. Baked chips are great, but nothing will beat or be as light or crispy as traditionally fried tortilla chips! However, if you want to cut back on calories, bake them.
There are three basic ways that we make homemade tortilla chips around here.
- The traditional way, fried in a pan of oil. The chips come out perfectly crispy with the signature bubbles on the surface and can be stored up to 5 days in a sealed container.
- Bake them in the oven. Makes a great chip, but it’s not nearly as crunchy as fried. Also keep in mind that baked chips don’t store as well as fried chips.
- Bake them in the microwave. Not preferred, but it is possible. Spread the tortilla wedges over a paper towel in a single layer. Microwave until the tortilla chips are crispy, but not burnt.
